Conquistadors and politicians, revolutionaries and artists. Diego Rivera’s Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park comprises characters from 400 years of Mexico’s history. Left of center is the child-sized self-portrait of the muralist, with his fourth wife, painter Frida Kahlo, above and behind him. Rivera holds the skeletal hand of La Calavera Catrina, herself positioned next to her black-suited creator, illustrator José Guadalupe Posada. Rivera’s embellished Dame Catrina is a well-known figure of sociopolitical satire featured in Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations to this day.
